Good to know
Most cool-season lawns in central Illinois do best mowed weekly during the growing season, a bit less often in the heat of summer. Cutting too short stresses the grass and invites weeds.
Dry patches usually come down to compacted soil, uneven watering, grubs, or a mix of all three. Aeration and a look at the watering schedule usually sort out which one it is.
Fall is the best window for both in this part of Illinois. Cooler temperatures and steady moisture give new grass time to root before winter.
Fertilization feeds the grass you already have. Weed control targets what you don't want growing in it. Most lawns need both, on their own schedule through the season.
